reason number 947,476
that i love my dad.
he is the most frugal person in the world. he used to forward me "the cheapest man in america" e-mail lists, and usually, he'd done at least one thing on the list.
i'd forgotten about the sign.
we lived in a tiny little box of a house down mccormick drive, back in the day. so small that mike's crib was in a closet. the fam was outgrowing our digs.
mom and dad found our new house further down the beach, and we moved into it in 1981. lots of room, shag green carpets, brown walls, and the fabu orange plaid couches...with two chevy vegas parked out front. (one of the only families in america to have not one, but two vegas) one of those vegas became a malibu classic station wagon. to say that we were on the edge of cool was the understatement of the century.
anyway, when we moved in, dad wanted to save a little cash. so he took the sign of the previous owners (the fowlers) and flipped it over. he painted our family name on the sign, and rehung it, with the back now facing out.
and twenty five years later, it's still there. with "fowler" facing the inside of the garage.
that's a priceless family heirloom now. :)
