Small Successes • Vol. 1

Faith and Family Live has a sweet little weekly Thursday blog focus by Danielle Bean on 'small successes' -- a concept I never truly understood until giving birth to our first born last month. Balancing a dozen different projects used to be routine...and now, with a newborn, I am definitely celebrating the small successes each day. And today, the 12th, seems like worlds apart from what we were experiencing one month ago today.

And I am exceptionally grateful for a 13-week maternity leave to truly start to adjust to this new lifestyle with our son. Thank you, Merrill Lynch.

As Danielle says, "It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph." Amen.

Without further ado, here are my three recent small successes, not surprisingly, having to do with life as a new mom...
  1. I have successfully transitioned Thomas off formula and entirely over/back to breastfeeding. While this is really pretty big, it happened with a bunch of daily small steps to make it happen...therefore, the small success! It was exceptionally difficult to do so immediately after he was discharged from the NICU, since we needed to keep his weight up and we needed to supplement formula a good deal of the time. But now, things are running much smoother...and he loves it.

Though I've never had reason to be a breastfeeding advocate, I am definitely appreciative of the bill that's before the Washington State Government Committee right now. It protects a woman's right to breastfeed in public...which I am getting more comfortable with. :) And I marvel at the women for whom it's simply second nature.

  2. We survived a marathon Tuesday night when Thomas actually nursed more than he slept. Jonathan was a huge help that night, because the doggies thought it was an all night party, with all the screaming (from Thomas) and yelling (us). :) He slept much better last night - a four hour stint from midnight to 4 am was heavenly.

  3. Thomas visited his first brokerage firm (my office) and law firm (Jonathan's office) yesterday. He was great on our first road trip without Jonathan. We had lunch with Grandma in Gig Harbor, then stopped to see Grandpa, his Uncle Mike, and the gang at Merrill, and down to CTM in Olympia.

And because every post is better with a photo...here's one that I love from this week. It gives me flashbacks to Tuesday night. Picture this, nonstop, all night long. All. Night. Long.

Want to come out for a night on the farm? :)

Yes, small successes are the best!

Just wait until he's 2 1/2 years old and asks repeatedly--while crying because he's SO tired (like 200 times--I'm not kidding), WHY he can't watch Veggie Tails @9pm (when he's suppose to be in bed). Our small success last night, getting Charlie to FINALLY realize we meant YES it's way past bedtime and you MUST stay in your big girl bed (she's was OUT COLD within 5 minutes of laying down and not talking/crying)...Gosh, her & I both could have used a drink last night!

Keep enjoying those small successes!!!

Thomas is so precious and amazing. He needs you much more than Merril Lynch does - why not stay home with him all day every day? It's so worth it!
